Learn About Venetian Carnival Masks Reviews

As the holiday season fast approaches, our attentions start to turn to all the parties we are being invited too. If you are lucky, you may well be invited to attend a masquerade, or masked, ball. If this is the case, you will really want to look your very best; complete with one of the seductive and intriguing Venetian Carnival masks.

Whilst other masks can be bought of course, there really is no compare to the beauty of these designs and, with a glittering and often obscure history to them; their appeal is even greater.

As would be expected, they get their name from the infamous carnivals that used to take place in Italy; though most particularly Venice.

In the eighteenth century, Venice was a must visit on the route of the Grand Tourists from England, and the hedonistic lifestyle was no more in evidence than in the dangerous and exotic streets of the floating city.

Whilst Venetian Carnival masks had long been in evidence of course, it was through this period that they really became known across the world.

They were worn, as you would expect, as a disguise, in order that certain inhibitions could be lowered and sordid activities undertaken without the embarrassment of either party, (or parties), recognizing each other.

Covering the upper part of the face, only the mouth was exposed, which was used to commence proceedings that each party wished to enter into. Though other masks did hide the entire face; should oral activities not be wanted, and some just the eyes; for a more risqué association.

It was a time when upper classes reveled and lived for the day; with gay abandon and no regards for the future. But of course, such is the want of the upper class, it was important that they exuded a certain amount of class and style; despite the anonymity.

Because of this, the Venetian Carnival masks were things of beauty, elegance, decadence and desire; crafted from luxurious materials, leathers, precious stones and gems and of course precious metals.

This tradition continues today of course, though more affordable, but equally beautiful masks can be bought. The best ones are handmade, and hand painted; and some of these too are within the budgets of most.

Styles of Venetian Carnival masks to look out for include the Moretta; particularly for the ladies, and the evocative and well recognized Medico Della Peste which, with its long hooked nose is synonymous with the tradition.
